Personally, I go for a sword that's about four and a half feet long, three and a half foot blade and a foot long hilt. But I suppose a shorter blade is both lighter and a bit faster. I'd hate to sacrifice the reach, though, and the leverage.
Well this one is short, but very light, in pounds is a bit over 2-1\2. It really depends on your fencing style. Longsword is not my weapon of choice (I prefer scottish backsword) but when I use it I always try to close the mesure stepping towards my opponent while hiding behind the blade in short mulinels. For that fencing style a shorter faster weapon is perfect.
See, I prefer fighting in long point, because reach and speed are my main strengths. I can't afford to get into blade binds [I'm not physically stocky enough to survive them], so my swords tend to be on the longer side, so I can attack without having to sacrifice distance.
Well it sounds right, you need a long sword with a long grip to have more leverage if you find yourself into bindings. I made a couple of swords like this and I'm making another one this summer.
